DIY Holiday Garland Using Deco Mesh (Holiday Decor Series)

I am already in the holiday spirit. I’m playing my Mariah Carey and Merry men Christmas CD’s all day long and I’m ready to put upΒ the holiday decor. This weekend hubby brought out all the Christmas boxes out of the attic for me! YEA!! But now all those boxes are a little overwhelming. So I decided to tackle something every day and take it one project at a time. I am trying a new look for my ChristmasΒ porch this year and decorating it with deco mesh garland. I will show you the finished porch in an upcoming post, for now take a look at this easy DIY holiday garland.

DIY Holiday Garland Using Deco Mesh (Holiday Decor Series) - Make your own stunning Christmas garland with this quick tutorial!
Β My Aunt Cookie showed me how to use Deco Mesh about 4 christmas’s ago and I’ve been hooked every since! Thank you Aunt Cookie! The pop of vibrant color it adds is unmatched. In fact she gifted me some beautiful copper deco mesh and I started collecting ornaments based on that! Now every year we have a copper and gold xmas tree. Its not traditional but thats why I love it! I will do another post on how to decorate your christmas tree with deco mesh, but for now…on with the DIY holiday garland!

Step 1

Get some decent garland. I always look for garland with at Β least 2 different types of greenery some berries and pinecones are nice as well. I got this set from Garden Ridge last year after xmas for 50% off!

So I used two 9 ft garlands for one long garland to go around my front door. To connect the two I used some green pipe cleaners

And now we have 18 foot garland! I attached 2 strings of 100ct white lights at this point.

Β Now its time to add the deco mesh (from Hobby Lobby)! I ended up only using the two wide rolls and not the shorter deco mesh ribbon rolls. I also used some chevron green and red wired ribbon for an extra pop (got it at Sams)!
Again I used green pipe cleaners to attach the first piece of deco mesh. I scrunched up the end and wrapped around the garland to secure.

Then I simply scrunched up the mesh to my desired ‘poofiness’ and yes that’s a technical word! For each poof I simply used a strand of garland to secure the mesh.

I kept doing these poofs until I reached the end. The 18ft garland used one roll of 30 ft deco mesh. Boom first round of mesh done!
Next round of mesh was the green. I secured exactly as I did for the red. Trying to go in between each red loop to cover as much garland as possible.
It was starting to come together but it needed one bit of contrast to make it perfect. Enter chevron ribbon!
Perfection!
Now you could keep going at this point and add oversized ornaments, berries, sprays etc but i think i will leave mine alone right here.
See you in the next Holiday Decor Series!
