How to Potty Train Twins and Survive! #GIVEAWAY #ad #PUBigKid

Sponsored post

So today I’m going to give you some tips on how to potty train twins! The twincesses’ potty training journey began really enthusiastically, I read this book about a 3 day potty training system, I planned to lock us in the house for those 3 days and do nothing but put them in panties and put them on the potty and play. I was so excited about that magical system. Lets just say 1 hour, 6 potty clean ups on my carpet, bed, closet, couch and fireplace (don’t ask) and I was exhausted, crying and so over the 3 day system! I abandoned that system and took a more practical approach that has worked wonders for my twincesses and my sanity. I bought some Pull-Ups® training pants and logged on to Pull-Ups® Big Kid Academy and oh my goodness, they have so many tools and resources that really got me back on track. So here are my tips for on how you can potty train twins AND keeping your sanity!

1) Are we there yet?

The first decision is: are they ready? The worse thing you can do is start potty training too early. That leads to burn out for both you and them, you could also have to deal with regression. I started potty training my girls at 2.5 years old. That may be late to some but it was when I felt they showed signs of readiness like being able to pull their pants up and down on their own, they could tell me when they needed to go and the most important sign: when I was tired of lifting them onto the changing table.

2) Double the Fun or Double Trouble

With twins you also have to decide: do you potty train both at the same time or one at a time. My choice was BOTH at the same time. Why you ask? Cause potty training is hard, frustrating and stressful work….who wants to finally achieve success then start all over again with the other twin? Plus why not use that good ole twin competition/companionship thing to your advantage. The twincesses both encouraged and competed against each other which worked well for potty training success.

3) Pull-Ups® training pants AND panties

I chose to start the potty training with Pull-Ups® training pants for so many reasons. Cleaning up potty messes is hard work and with twins its double the clean up. Pull-Ups® training pants took all that clean up frustration out of the equation.  They also have easy open sides which means messes are a breeze to check for and change if need be, the sides are stretchy so its easier for the twinkies to pull up and down and lastly they feature the Disney characters that the girls already love. The twincesses’ were so excited to pick out Ariel, Doc Mcstuffins, Jake and the Never land Pirates and Lightning McQueen. I like that the training pants come in so many sizes as well, 2T–3T (18- 34 lbs.); 3T–4T (32–40 lbs.) and 4T–5T (38+ lbs.), my girls are currently in 3T-4T. Pull-Ups® training pants also come in cool alert, night time designs and learning designs. The cool alert is cool indeed, because it actually gets cool when your child gets wet. The Disney characters fade away when wet on the learning designs and there is extra absorbency in the Night time designs. We currently use the Learning Designs or the Night time designs on the girls when they sleep and during the day we use panties.

4) Reward

I know, I know potty training should be its own reward, but you would be surprised what kids will do for a sticker, a Hershey kiss or a fruit snack. It’s called motivation people, and it works. I will tell you, don’t start with huge rewards and don’t give a reward every time or you will be in candy/sticker hell. We downloaded this awesome potty training chart from Pull-Ups® Big Kid Academy website and it worked great. The girls picked what rewards they wanted such as to go for icecream and it actually worked out great because hubby and I got alone time with the girls, and that is pretty rare. The girls really enjoyed going out on their own without twin sister along for the ride.

5) Set a timer!

Don’t wait on your kids to tell you they need to potty and never believe them when they say they don’t have to do. I learned that the hard way, standing in line at the library with Peyton’s pee dripping down my leg (long story). Just take them to the potty every hour or half hour depending on your child. I used the Pull-Ups® Time to Potty App. It’s a timer that reminds you to take your kids to the potty, and it also has games and fun stuff for the kiddos.

6) Buy Different Types of Potties?

Potty seats, Potty chairs, just get one of each cause you never know what your child may actually like. After purchasing both a potty seat and potty chair the girls actually preferred to sit on the regular tiolet seat and had no issues with it. That worked out well for me because of course no more cleaning a potty chair out. So if you are going to purchase a potty seat, I recommend using the seats that double as stepping stools. Because if they are like my girls and they don’t use it as a potty, you can use it for a long time as a step stool.

7) Easy up and Easy down

Don’t forget to put the kiddos in clothes that they can easily get off to go potty. Skirts and pants with elastic waistbands are perfect. Forget the zippers, buttons and snaps, just make it easy for the kiddos to do their business. Don’t forget to use flushable wipes, the clean ups go way easier. And one important tip: NEVER leave the kiddos alone with tiolet paper. Trust me.

9) Ignore

Ignore all the advice you will hear about how this person potty trained in 3 days, and their cousin potty trained themselves at 9 months. The only person you should listen to is your child, they will tell/show you what works for them. Potty training won’t be easy but guess what…YOU’LL SURVIVE!
